SUMMER GELATO PAIRINGS
By: Janae Morris
Okay, so the cold weather is finally on hiatus and the warmest of the four seasons is just around the corner. Get excited! It's time to pull out your flip-flops, fire up the grill, dust off the beach ball and find the nearest gelateria to fulfill all of your favorite summertime dessert cravings. And not to worry, a moderate indulgence in gelato won't sabotage the chances of you sporting an itty-bitty-teeny-weeny yellow polka dot bikini...or tankini? One-piece? Trunks? The style options of swimwear are numerous, kind of like the flavors of gelato. But just as there's a perfect summertime bathing suit for individual body types, there's also a flavor of gelato to pair well with every personal taste this upcoming season. It's just about finding the right fit, which requires some research and decision-making.
First, consider that there are two kinds of gelato: cream-based and dairy-free. Cream-based gelato usually consists of nut and chocolate flavors, while dairy-free gelato is made with water and is normally fruit-based. Bear in mind that an abundance of fresh fruits are available during the warmer months, and there is normally an influx of cravings for juicy, refreshing produce, which makes dairy-free gelato, otherwise known as sorbetto, the preferable frozen dessert pairing with the season of summer.
Have a hankering for blueberries? How about a slight addiction to cherries? Do apples, peaches or watermelon seem to hit the spot on a hot summer's day...or night? Ideally, sorbetto can be made out of a plethora of desirable summer fruits, making it safe to dub this frozen delight "the flavor chameleon of specialty frozen desserts."
For fruit lovers out there, Men's Health Magazine reports that there are several enticing summer fruits you'll crave. The list includes pear, pineapple, mango, coconut, kiwi, guava, passion fruit, blackberry and cantaloupe, as well as peaches, blueberries and watermelon as mentioned above. Not only are these fruits flavorful but they are full of vitamins, minerals and healthful digestive characteristics. Bonus! They can also be enjoyed as a revitalizing sorbetto. The addition of enchanting fruity toppings such as pomegranate with seeds or whole sour cherries helps to make sorbetto the optimal summer dessert companion.
So name your fruit - pink grapefruit, red orange, raspberry, dare I say lemon and imagine it as a sweet, smooth, refreshing spoonful of calorie-friendly sorbetto. Keep in mind that fruit flavors also create wonderful indulgencies such as Italian ice, smoothies, slushies and even serve as a delicious base for frozen cocktails.
There you have it. Fruit-based frozen desserts such as sorbetto are the ideal summer dessert pairings to help make Mother Nature's spiking temperatures more pleasurable. Now, about the choice of swimwear you decide to enjoy them in, well, that's up to you!
